Floral, Decoration, and Monument Options Policies

The Hingham Cemetery provides a beautiful setting for the memorialization of loved ones. All landscaping and development in the Hingham Cemetery are carefully planned to blend with the natural contours of the ground and the historical tradition of this landmark. In the interest of all our lot and grave owners, the Hingham Cemetery maintains formal policies regarding floral decorations and monument design to protect the dignity of our cemetery.

Plantings

Plantings are permitted ONLY when performed by cemetery personnel under contract with the lot or grave owner. Memorial Day or Interments: Cut flowers, sprays, and potted flowers and plants brought by visitors may remain on lot sites up to 10 days after the holiday, memorialization, or burial. Afterward, they will be removed by cemetery personnel.

Removal

Any flowers or overgrown plants that no longer contribute to the beauty of the grounds shall be removed at the discretion of cemetery personnel. Likewise, artificial flowers, fencing, large urns, boxes or other personal items that do not conform to the standards of our rules and regulations shall be removed by authority of the cemetery personnel.

Monuments

Monuments must conform to the Hingham Cemetery guidelines and each must be reviewed by Cemetery Personnel before installation. Monument regulations may be obtained from the Cemetery Superintendent.

Prohibited Actions

The following actions are prohibited without specific Cemetery authorization: breaking, trimming or injuring any tree, shrub, flower, or plant; gravestone rubbing; repair and or cleaning of monuments. We appreciate the cooperation of all who visit the Hingham Cemetery in maintaining the integrity of this beautiful site.

We welcome your suggestions and assure you that the entire staff of the Hingham Cemetery is ready to assist you at any time.

Monument Restrictions

In keeping with the present and future historical nature of the Hingham Cemetery, it is requested that all new headstones be simple and traditional in size, shape, color, material, and decoration throughout the cemetery. However, cemetery directors will willingly review any unusual design.

Traditional materials might include gray or white granite, slate or marble.

·             All monuments in the Veteran's Section must be flush, gray granite Government markers (See Superintendent for details).

·              All Monuments in areas where roads or paths have been removed must be flush markers. (See Superintendent for locations and details)

·              All monuments must be reviewed by the cemetery Superintendent before installation and more ornate or non-traditional monuments must be approved by the Cemetery Board of Directors.

It is suggested that you contact the Superintendent before any purchase.
